subtitle:Climbing a small fraction of Shelf Road Chauncey and I got our first chance to visit Shelf Road near Canon City, CO, yesterday. Chauncey's coach, Cindy Geiman, and her husband Ric were gracious enough to introduce us to the area and served as phenomenal guides.
The picture to the left is of Chauncey going over the roof on "Minimum Security", a 5.11d. In this picture she's roughly 50 feet off the deck.
The 3 climbs we visited were "Dune" a 5.10a, "Spiny Dan", a 5.10c, and "Minimum Security", a 511.d (way out of my league, so I didn't do that one. :-)
Ric led all routes which was great - he's got tremendous climbing skill and was the one who bolted and put up "Minimum Security" (among about 25 others in the Shelf Road area.)
The picture on the right is of "Free Form Wall" on which Mimimum Security resides. "Minimum Security" is the 3rd vertical protrusion from the right, half shade/half lit.
This is another shot of Minimum Security with Ric Geiman navigating the nose. Also, Ric's wife and Chauncey's coach, Cindy Geiman, makes her way over the roof. You can make out this feature in the Free Form Wall shot above - it's the lit-up notch about half way up the 3rd vertical from the right.
Most of the chaulk marks on this route are down below indicating very few people make it up this route, but more than a few try. It's a burly route without all the nice pockets and crimps of a lot of other climbs in Shelf Road. Chauncey did finish this route with a couple rests. It was her personal best climb outdoors - she never gave up - her trademark.
This is a shot of the beautiful valley leading into the canyons of Shelf Road. This view is looking roughly southeast in the direction of Canon City. Shelf Road has well over 1,000 bolted sport climbs, is one of the most popular climbing areas in Colorado and is world-renowned for its pourous limestone and phenomenal sun-soaked walls for winter climbing.
Our sincere thanks go to Cindy and Ric for an awesome day at Shelf. You people are wonderful.
